Lyrics

Marathoning Elephants

I had made myself a sandwich and I plopped down in my chair
And flicked through many channels before I landed there
Young and old were running and having lots of fun
As they all tried to finish that 12K marathon
Well I watched all the activities unfold before my eyes
And very soon it dawned on me and took me by surprise
I pointed to the screen and yelled this is a disgrace
Why are there no elephants running in this race

Why don’t elephants run marathons
Are their feet just way to big to put those tennis shoes on
Maybe they’re just way too tall, maybe they’re just way to wide
Maybe its that heavy trunk that hangs between their eyes
Maybe its their floppy ears that make them insecure
Perhaps they look too silly wearing all that running gear
There’s got to be a reason and that’s why I wrote this song
Can anybody please tell me why elephants don’t run marathons

I see them in the cirrus doing lots of well trained feats
I see them in parades as they’re marching down the street
I see them in the movies moving lots of heavy loads
But why are there no elephants racing down the road
Perhaps because of their big size they’d burn too many calories
Which means that they would often have to take a break to eat
Or maybe someone in the government threw a tizzy fit
And now they are protected on endangered species lists
